Summary:  tla dies with `Too many open files'

Original Submission:  I did a star-merge (tla star-merge 
address@hidden/tla--devo--1.1), and got lots of (expected) applying-patches 
output, following by the error:

   unable to open directory "." (Too many open files)

   PANIC: I/O error

I guess there's a close missing somewhere...

I've attached the entire output as an attachment to this bug report.
