$(cmd) is not portable shell code; `cmd` is portable (as long as there
is no nesting). It's ill-advised to use non-portable shell code in
Makefile (as is the case of GNU electric) or configure scripts.
So far, I've been surviving with make SHELL=/path/to/bash, but someone
may not have bash or may not realize this trick is needed.
