I think that finder should make clear that elp superceeds profile in
some way. Is there a reason to support profile other than for
backwards compatibility? If there is none, then this should be made
clear in the profile.el docs.
I used profile.el for some time now, not knowing about the other
package, because I just looked at the files in lisp/emacs-lisp and
thought that "profile.el" had a promising name. I didn't bother to
continue looking.
I suggest to change
profile.el generate run time measurements of Emacs Lisp functions
into
profile.el deprecated Emacs Lisp Profiler, see elp.el
While we're at it, the node "Compilation Tips" in the elisp manual
mentions both packages. I suggest to mention only elp.el. As I was
looking for a profiler, I tried profile.el first without looking at
elp.el. It didn't occur to me that both packages would be
equivalent.
I was astonished at the age of profile.el, though. :)
