RMAIL does not load new mail

From: Jason Harrison
Subject: RMAIL does not load new mail
Date: Tue, 15 May 2001 06:55:57 -0700 (PDT)

This bug report will be sent to the Free Software Foundation,
not to your local site managers!!
Please write in English, because the Emacs maintainers do not have
translators to read other languages for them.

In GNU Emacs 20.7.1 (mips-sgi-irix6.5, X toolkit)
 of Tue Aug 22 2000 on lutece.cs.ubc.ca
configured using `configure --prefix=/cs/local/generic/lib/pkg/emacs-20.7
--exec-prefix=/cs/local/lib/pkg/emacs-20.7 --with-gcc'

Please describe exactly what actions triggered the bug
and the precise symptoms of the bug:

My status bar in emacs reports that I have mail, and
/usr/mail/harrison contains messages. But when I try to get mail in
RMAIL (using either M-x RMAIL or just g in RMAIL) RMAIL tells me that
I have no new mail.

This happens when I'm logged into both out Solaris and our Irix
machines -- it used to happen occasionally on our Solaris machines and
then would go away. I've touched my /usr/mail/harrison file to make
sure it is newer than my ~/RMAIL file but no good. Why is that my
Status line can report new mail but RMAIL can/won't load it?

My RMAIL file is 253320 bytes (not as large as it has been). If I
rename it and then try to get mail I'm told:
BABYL OPTIONS: -*- rmail -*-
Version: 5
Labels:
Note: This is the header of an rmail file.
Note: If you are seeing it in rmail,
Note: it means the file has no messages in it.
