No, it's a feature: Emacs saves the auto-save files in the internal
encoding used within Emacs to represent non-ASCII characters. This is
done to make sure buffers restored from the autosave files are always
identical to what their contents were at the moment of autosaving.

I'm not sure I understand the situation you are describing. Please
elaborate more: what exactly did you type, and what did you see.
