Of course, having more things activated by default when Emacs boots up 
means that there are more things that must be included in the base
distribution of Emacs.

It might be nicer to have a package management system (a la XEmacs) in 
Emacs that can take care of adding things to auto-mode-alist (etc.)
when the package is installed.
