I don't see why would many users want the lines to be centered
horizontally. Perhaps a separate command to do that would be useful,
but for C-l to do that by default? yuck!

There's no need to mention it anymore: the next release of Emacs
features automatic horizontal scrolling. hscroll-global-mode will be
deprecated when the next release is out.
