OK, Thanks, I shouldn't have been so specific.  Let me try again:

I had a file in a buffer and had somehow got things fudged and was
really in the mood to do find-alternate-file to reread it afresh, etc.
Well, I hit the C-x C-v, which even prompts with the name of the
current file, how convenient.  What's not convenient is that C-x C-v
puts me at the top of the reread file instead of putting me where I
was.  Indeed, I think any record of where I was is now gone from
anywhere in emacs.  Therefore how about find-alternate-file, if it
notices it has been given the same filename as current, then please
restore cursor position [as best as possible].  OK, no big deal, but I
was thinking if it is nice enough to hand you the current filename in
the prompt, it might as well go all the way with the Mercedes-Benz
treatment.
