vm-6.97 crashes when visiting a new folder+images enabled

When visiting a new folder (vm-visit-folder) the first parts of the mail
(To:, Subject: etc) is hidden by the images. Shortly thereafter emacs crashes.

(setq vm-image-directory "/usr/share/emacs/etc/vm")
(setq vm-toolbar-pixmap-directory "/usr/share/emacs/etc/vm")

Commenting out the entries above everything is OK (except no
navigation images)

Emacs  : GNU Emacs 21.1.1 (i686-redhat-linux-gnu, X toolkit, Xaw3d scroll bars)
 of 2001-11-03 on em2.my.own.domain
Package: VM 6.97

This was reported to the vm author, who referred to the Emacs maintaners.
