As far as I know, there are known binary incompatibilities between
Xaw, Xaw3d, neXtaw, XawM and the few other derivatives of Xaw.
So when you compile with one, you should dynamic-link with the same.
This is not always necessary, because the differences are minor
and in the case of Emacs, this should not be a problem, but maybe
you're being burned by such a problem.
Could you try to rebuild your Emacs but this time build it with neXtaw
rather than Xaw3d and see if the problem persists.
