emacs hangs windows 2000 pro

I've just started using emacs (21.1.1) under Windows 2000 professional.
Twice today it has made the machine emit continous loud beeps and hang
completely. The first time it was bringing up help info. The second time it
was loading xslide for an xsl file. It's a real pain to turn off the power
and then wonder how long it will stay up. Any suggestions on how I can get
some stability here?
