Gnus should quote mode-string after truncating, instead of before.
Even ignoring trailing %'s, truncating should use the unquoted string
to get the correct length, as that is the string that will displayed.
However, I had the same suspicion, and made that change (not
commited). I still got the freeze, and debugging showed that the %
was quoted in any case.
