The output does go to a separate buffer, as in previous versions; the
display in the minibuffer is _in_addition_ to that, not instead of it.
You should find the output in the same "*Shell Command Output*"
buffer as you did in previous versions. The doc string of
dired-do-shell-command still tells, correctly, that the output goes
to a separate buffer.
