Fellas, is it true that the most convenient way to end one search and
start another is C-a C-s? [I'm not talking about C-g, silly. I'm
happy with where "point" is now.] Wait, I bet C-f C-s is better in
that one doesn't re-search from the beginning of line... however C-a
and C-s are more co-located.
C-s a C-s C-s C-s C-s C-s C-a C-s b C-s C-s C-s C-s C-s
Anyway, the bug, I suppose is that I bet the fine point of what is the
best way to end one search [leaving cursor where it is] and begin
another isn't documented.
"Type C-s to search again forward, C-r to search again backward."
Hmm, this line from Help should say "search again for the same item"
lest one think otherwise.
Info says:
" When you are satisfied with the place you have reached, you can type
<RET>, which stops searching, leaving the cursor where the search
brought it. Also, any command not specially meaningful in searches
stops the searching and is then executed. Thus, typing `C-a' would
exit the search and then move to the beginning of the line. <RET> is
necessary only if the next command you want to type is a printing
character, <DEL>, <RET>, or another character that is special within
searches (`C-q', `C-w', `C-r', `C-s', `C-y', `M-y', `M-r', `M-s', and
some other meta-characters)."
OK, but still on this page I don't see that the question "what is the
scientifically proven best way to end one search, happy where the
cursor is now, and begin another search for a different item?"
RET C-s looks good, but C-a C-s are co-located ... anyway, Info ought
to address this issue ... there might be teens out there too
embarrassed to ask, especially after they see what happens to this
post.
AvgResponse> Questions like this are better asked in gnu.emacs.help
But I was hoping that the RMS would see it and then add the right
words to Info, as there might be teens out there too embarrassed to
ask.
