SIGSEGV in GNU Emacs, only in batch mode - what I forgot to say

Dear Ruminants,
                                oops - some possibly
useful information was missed out in my last message.
I'm running in GNU/Linux (a fairly clean Mandrake 9.0
installation) on yet another x86 box.  The seggy
was first seen with GNU Emacs 21.1.something,
locally built for a K6 with no special options.
My current build is of version 21.3.1 which calls
itself
GNU Emacs 21.3.1 (i686-pc-linux-gnu, X toolkit) of 2003-04-26
