The variable printer-name can be customized by using
M-x customize-apropos printer-name
but not by
M-x customize-variable printer-name
It seems to me that it should be possible using customize-variable.
I've checked this on
GNU Emacs 21.3.1 (i386-msvc-nt5.0.2195) of 2003-04-09 on SIRIUS
and GNU Emacs 21.1 on Mandrake
