Completion List mode buffer behavior |

Hello,
I am running emacs 21.3.1 (w/motif). In the completion list mode
(C-x-f then press space), the mouse-choose-completion function seems to
mismanage the buffers. When I choose a completion that is a directory,
a new buffer is opened with that directory in completion list mode. The
correct behavior is to open that directory in completion list mode in
the *same* buffer as I selected it from. This allows me to navigate
thru heirarchical directory structures as I expect. This is implemented
in xemacs in the normal way (I understand that the code is probably
tainted tho), and tho I have looked at some length, I cannot figure out
how to set a variable or bind a function to alter this behavior to the
expected behavior.
Thanks
