gud-mode --annotate=3 option and nested shells

Nested shells are freezing due to --annotate=3 option.
I think that the Ctrl-Z (^Z) character is being output and not recognized by 
the nested shell making it freezing.
The problem does not appear without the --annotate=3 option.

Here is the output from GDB in gud-mode:
