Info node (emacs)Directory Tracking says
"You can also use `M-x dirtrack-mode' to enable (or disable) an
alternative and more aggressive method of tracking changes in the
current directory."
which, evidently, means dirtrack-mode from dirtrack.el. But shell.el
sets up a bunch of aliases, dirtrack-*, which point to its own
directory tracking mechanism. So you can't really access functions
from dirtrack.el using dirtrack-mode if you've already loaded
shell-mode.
