Not in this code. The implicit rule for file name substitutions, that if
an environment variable does not exists, the corresponding "$VAR" string
remains untouched, does apply here.
But you are right; I should handle this case (via the usual "$$"
encoding). I'll extend the function; but I don't know whether I'm able
to do it before my vacation next week.
