bug#4309: Builds in Terminal, fails in Emacs

My reports above are based on attempting to perform the build from a  
shell running in a *shell* buffer in Emacs 23.1.

When I perform the same build in a shell running in Terminal.app it  
succeeds.

So maybe something is different about the shell environment when  
running in Emacs?
