Maybe auto-mode-alist should be case-insensitive only for entries
that don't contain upper case letters (i.e. to follow the logic of
`isearch-no-upper-case-p')?

Yes, this would help.  I don't know why Info files in the `info' subdir
miss the `.info' file extension.
