bug#11290: 24.1.50; iswitchb messed up by non-contactable remote machines

When I type C-x b and type enough characters to activate the name of a
buffer for a file earlier visited by tramp, and then killed, on a host
that is no longer contactable, iswitchb is messed up. I get a prompt
saying that an scpc connection is being attempted, which (sometimes
after waiting for a while) fails, and then typing a letter overwrites
the current last character of the suggested buffer name, rather than
being appended to it. The minibuffer flashes as if some tramp prompt or
error were being briefly shown.

*Messages* shows the error:

Error in post-command-hook (iswitchb-post-command): (file-error "Process died")
