Indeed.  Programming language syntax is designed to be parsed forward,
so parsing it backward can sometimes be surprisingly difficult.

I think open-paren-in-column-0-is-defun-start is on the way out, FWIW.
`syntax-ppss' makes is largely irrelevant.
