Disabling font-lock and avoiding the `recenter' calls works pretty well, so I rather focus on improving those than modifying comint to workaround this.
Given font-locking is an issue only when triggered while output arrives, maybe there is a way to disable it alongside with RET, but enabling it as soon no output is pending? Andreas
