    The only vaguely related project I've heard of recently is the one that
    provided an Info-mode-like behavior to view Texinfo docs in your
    web browser.

Right.  That would be a replacement for the standalone info program.

    That's very nice, indeed, but I still want to read my docs within Emacs,
    so it doesn't really help me,

We won't have much trouble implementing the same facility inside Emacs.
