Starting from emacs -Q, setting the default font with

  M-x set-default-font RET Inconsolata-12 RET

results in

  set-face-attribute: Font not available: #<font-spec nil nil Inconsolata nil 
nil nil nil nil 12.0 nil nil nil ((:name . "Inconsolata-12") (user-spec . 
"Inconsolata-12"))>

Note that the exact same procedure is successful when using Emacs24.3
