Works for me too, both on GTK+3 and no-toolkit builds from master.

Maybe only GTK+2?  The OP reports:

GNU Emacs 28.0.50 (build 1, x86_64-pc-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version 2.24.31,
 cairo version 1.14.8) of 2020-10-16 built on SS

I'm using:

GNU Emacs 28.0.50 (build 38, x86_64-pc-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version 3.24.17,
 cairo version 1.17.3) of 2020-10-21
