I'm not fond about it either; it's just a hack. I'm not sure if it makes 
connections slower or not (if so, it's 100 ms).

We really should seek a sound understanding of the bug so that a proper 
solution can be found. However the patch is important in that it does seem to 
work (and consistently so) and could assist us in developing a theory.
