In add_properties, if I see anything that betrays monospaceness, like an image or a so-called display-string, I revert to character-by-character scanning, that is the buffer is no longer "behaved."
Yes, I understood that part of your reasoning. What I'm asking is why you believe that doing that is enough. Aren't there other reasons besides properties that "betray monospaceness"?
