I had just sorted cases on a variable value and was deleting cases with a particular value. I should note that I had just done the exact same sort/select/delete procedure a few minutes before. After that deletion I had closed the data file without saving because I had deleted more than I intended. When I reopened the datafile to delete fewer cases I encountered the bug.
