Hi Alan,
Thanks for informing us of the problem so promptly.
Fortunately a configure time check for `gsl_interp_steffen' wasn't too
hard to implement (as shown in the link below).

It is implemented in the following tarball.

For systems with the older version of GSL, a warning should be printed
at the end of configure time, the build shouldn't fail, and all the
tests should pass.
