Achim Mueller (address@hidden -- also a reader of this
list) reported a similar problem on his Redhat 7.3 box.
Maybe he can provide some help?
Perhaps
rm config.cache; ./configure --disable-nls; gmake clean; gmake
will help?!
You may also try
rm config.cache; ./configure --with-included-gettext; gmake clean; gmake
or
rm config.cache; ./configure --without-included-gettext; gmake clean; gmake
