It works now. 1../autogen.sh 2.aclocal (ignore the message) 3.autoconf 
4.autoheader 5.automake --add-missing 5../configure ...

I don't know if all steps are necessary, but ...

Starting now trying to compile on FreBSD (I have to admit that I like
this stuff - seems more stable, better memory management and better
package management).
