more recent version of GNU so that I may benefit from all the improvements
that I have been reading about. I have been reluctant to do so because I am
afraid to lose all the saved data, such as records, and saved matches. I am
sure that there is a way to do so without losing everything and I would
greatly appreciate getting instructions on doing so. Perhaps this is
something that could be incorporated into the manual or FAQ for the less
computer literate among us.

You can find the 'how to' either in 'All about GNU' from A. Silver
( URL: http://www.bkgm.com/gnu/AllAboutGNU.html#windows_95_98_users )
or here:
http://users.skynet.be/bk228456/getting_started.htm#2_upgrade
Since the 030701 build, some of the DLLs ( dynamic link libraries ) used by
gnubg (or incorporated packages) are changed.
So it is indeed 'upgrade' you are looking for.
