And I must say it makes a huge difference. I can now choose between
normal 3D on my non-accelerated laptop, complete with shadows (but
somewhat jerky automation, alleged 0 frames/second), no shadows, still
a bit jerky (2 frames/second) or fast draw and very smooth automation
at 67 frames/second and very smooth animation. 

I have not yet seen any anomolous behaviour such as partial erasures
etc. 

That's quite a change - about a 30x speed up in drawing rate.
