Hello Developers,
I just built gnubg from CVS as of June 15, 2009 05:07 GMT and the
program is behaving rather strangely. It is playing poorly, and
making tutor recommendations which are clearly wrong.
I just pulled latest CVS, built on my MAC. Made sure evals were set
to 2
ply/2ply (even tried 0ply/0ply) and started money sessions with
Tutor mode
on and Manual dice.
It believes that the normal 8/3 6/3 play is correct (even on 0
ply). I also
don't experience the problem
Is it possible your weights file is corrupt? Is it possible there is a
problem with the Settings/Evaluations (Make sure the plies are
correct and
there is no noise)?? (Can you verify)
I tried the test with high die on right, and clicked on the top 8pt
and it
moved correctly to the 3pt. Which is what you'd expect. This is
likely do to
an option that is wrong. Go to Settings/Options..., click the
"Dice" tab. I
am betting that you hav no checkmark in "Show higher die on left".
If not,
check it and then try your test again. If I remove the checkmark I
see the
behavior you describe.
Is this a windows build you built?

Gnubg always plays the left die first by default. Have you checked
the
option to show the higher die on the left? Check
Settings...Options...Dice...Show high die on left.
(To developers: I suggest that this setting be hard-coded and removed
from the interface. Does it help anybody to have the alternatives
available?)
What weights file are you using? It sounds like you might have an
out
of date weights file, or it may even be missing altogether. Check
Help...About...Evaluation Engine. The weights file should be 0.15.
