No, it's worse than that.  The glibc regex is completely unsuitable
for Emacs right now.  For example, it doesn't implement split buffers
worth beans.

Merging the two regex versions will be a major task.  It's not simply
a matter of waiting a few months for the glibc regex bugs to shake
out.  (And this is assuming that people can agree about what the regex
semantics should be.)
