Some time ago I was a user of GNU Stow. I don't recall why I
stopped, but ISTR Stow would address that kind of issue.
Well, not everyone wants to use stow or similar sysems. And if I
install the package in its own prefix then the whole thing is a moot
point. But this is not the standard way to install things (for good
reason, IMHO), so ...
plus I'm not sure this sort of administravia falls into `make
install''s job.
Hmm, seems to me that nothing else has the necessary information.
Automake (autoconf?) is what knows what files are getting installed,
because it's creating the install targets. Is there any harm in having
it create a manifest file?
Anyway ...
