In this case, it's important that all translations of the same name
to a given language ends up the same, otherwise the users will have
a hard time recognizing it as the same name. Now, if you have one copy
of your name in GNU tar, one in diffutils, one in coreutils, one in
patch, etc. with differents "and ..." before or after it, how can you
synchronize the Japanese translator of GNU tar, the one of diffutils,
the one of coreutils, etc.?

To solve this, I think the right approach is a message domain that
contains only the names of package authors and which is global.

I have started it at
http://cvs.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/translation/whoiswho/
but I don't know whether it will take off.

The way to use this message catalog would be through calls to
dgettext ("whoiswho", author[i])
inside version-etc. But I don't think it's worth worrying about it now:
it's certainly one year or two until there is enough interest in it.
