Finding the one true way is hard.
Maybe there is not just `one' in this case.
Thanks to both of you for all of the arguments.

My impression is that for the vast majority of languages,
author name translations will be context *in*dependent.
Also, I like the idea of factoring author name translations --
and maybe even using a separate domain.

So, I'm going to switch back to this form for coreutils
  #define AUTHORS _("name #1"), _("name #2"), ...
and mark all names for `translation'.

I presume that such identity-translations won't cause trouble
for translators.  Please correct me if that's not true.

Of course, if experience shows us that a significant number
of translations can be improved by using a different approach,
I'll be happy to flip-flop again :-)

So, Paul, if you're still not using gnulib's version-etc.c,
what do you think about replacing it with version-etc-2.c?
