Now I see (sorry) that even -ansi accepts declarations in the middle of
a function. As the gcc manual says, it is allowed as an extension in
C89 mode. Do I have to resort to -pedantic? Ick, it causes warnings
like this:
install-info.c:378: warning: string length `1640' is greater than the length
`509' ISO C89 compilers are required to support

Oh well, I guess I'll just try to avoid writing mixed declarations in code.
