completely unsuited for Emacs because it doesn't really support
split buffers.
But Emacs is not using gnulib's regex.c, it has its own. As we know.
(I don't think Emacs uses anything from gnulib, does it?)
So Emacs is not the issue. The question is what horrible differences are
there between lib/regex.[ch] and glibc's regex.[ch], and do both need to
exist. Last time I looked (quite a while ago), it didn't seem like the
differences were that pronounced.
