I don't see why; can you explain?  If intmax_t is defined this way:

  #define intmax_t long long

then this works:

  typedef intmax_t foo_type;

I don't know about "optimal", but it does provide a way for user code
to tell that gnulib was here: "#ifdef intmax_t".
