I believe I applied all your suggestions. I also ran 'indent' on the
files.  New version below.

The semantics when the pointers overlap isn't well defined, I think,
or at least not documented, so I added the restrict keywords.

However, the restrict module is marked as GPL, so gnulib-tool --import
refuse to use it for me, and there is no copying condition in
restrict.m4.  How about the patch below?
