Or maybe I am?

Imagine a case like findutils where there are two pairs of
directories, gnulib/m4 and gnulib/lib for gnulib sources,
as well as m4/ and lib/ for package-specific sources.
What happens when someone wants to add a package-specific
m4/*.m4 file that uses e.g., AC_REPLACE_FUNCS or AC_LIBOBJ?
Automake will end up looking in gnulib/lib for the
corresponding source file(s), rather than in the intended lib/.

In that case, it'd be nice to have a way to tell automake
where to look for required source files.
