Well, in findutils, it's used only in lib/gnulib/Makefile.am,
but lib/Makefile.am uses @FINDLIBOBJS@, supported by a few custom
autoconf macros defined in m4/findlib.m4.

Developers shouldn't have to jump through such hoops.
