I find this one palatable too.  

I prefer buildaux/, though, because I'm used to short, all lower
case, alphanumeric directory names.  build-aux sounds very
lispish to me :)  But probably we should not try to square off
these cosmetic details.  I know some people like to capitalize
directory names, as in BuildAux.  I guess some will likely
prefer build_aux.  At least none of these names looks confusing
to me.
