        Thanks for this information. I kind of expected config.rpath to
be provided by the autotools. I'd like to have the benefit of some macros
that can be found in gettext but which are really general purpose.

        Anyway, I'll just procrastinate some more and find another way
to know the dynamic library extension in use at my current OS.
