I have hoped we wouldn't have to change CVS Autoconf so much any more,
so that Autoconf-2.60 could be out really soon, so that we could start
putting shell functions in the next big release, obsoleting all those
*ONCE macros, and turning a "9%" size reduction into a much larger one.
